Legal metrology covers all regulatory systems implemented by the public authorities to guarantee the quality of the measurement instruments used in commercial transactions.
 
Created in 1986, the ONML is a public administrative establishment (EPA) which comes under the Ministry for Industry and Investment Promotion.
 
Its main task is to ensure measurement reliability of instruments requiring legal certification and which have a direct effect on the fairness of commercial exchanges, health, security, the environment and the quality of industrial production.
 
Its objectives are the safeguard for public guarantee, protection of the national economy in terms of national and international exchanges, and consumer protection.
