algerie en bref

Algeria is located in North Africa and spans an area of 2,381,741 Km2.

Long borders of 6000 km separate it from Morocco, Tunisia, Mauritania, Western Sahara, Niger, Mali and Libya.

In the North, the Mediterranean laps along 1200 km of coastline while in the South, the desert stretches across almost two million Km2.

Algeria’s landscape is rich in contrasts. It comprises four large and distinct regions from North to South which are characterised by their climate and landscape:

  • The coastal region – 80 to 190 km wide, this area is home to the country’s riches plains and areas. It has a Mediterranean climate. The eastern part, shaped by the Kabylie and Constantine mountains, is the wettest in the country.
  • The plateaus and high plains – These areas stretch from East to West, with an altitude varying from 600 to 1000 metres. Their climate is semi-arid, enabling cereals to be grown without irrigation thanks to certain depressions known as chott.
  • The Saharan Atlas – the southern section of the mountain range marks the border between the northern region and the Sahara. Mt. Chélia in the Aurès is the highest peak at 2,328 metres.
  • The Sahara – It covers a large part of southern Algeria, i.e. 2 million Km2. Temperatures range from an average of 36°C during the day to 5°C at night. The sub-soil here is rich in oil and natural gas, but also in precious metals found during the recent prospecting of the Hoggar massif. The Sahara represents 97% of Algeria’s exports.
